Only in America...the state of Washington demonstrated why taxpayers in America are disgusted with government. On February 17, Washington's Department of Social and Health Services mailed $1.00 checks to 250,000 food stamp recipients in the state. Why would government do something so stupid?

Simple...the state needed to send the quarter of a million dollars to trigger an additional $43 million in federal food benefits. God forbid the state show some fiscal restraint.

Perhaps next time the bureaucrats should hold a lottery for the 250,000 victims -- winner takes all. The grand prize could be either a $250,000 annuity for a life time of foodstamps or a "lump sum" payment in food stamps of about $100,000.

Just think of all the buzz such a lottery would create around the state and nation. Surely this would encourage more people to sign up for the program in hopes that they would hit the jackpot!

What happens in Washington, stays in Washington? The Beltway Blowhards in DC must be wondering why they didn't think of this.
