"Throw Long and Deep" - INTERCEPTION ?
A few days ago, Rahm Emanuel, the incoming White House chief of staff, boasted to a group of Wall Street business leaders that President - elect Barack Obama would hit the ground running soon after he takes office in January, 2009. He said the administration would "THROW LONG AND DEEP" and take advantage of the current economic mess by pushing dramatic "changes" (there is that Obama word again) in health care, taxes, energy and regulation. Emanuel challenged the business leaders to help the middle class and that "we are going to have to do BIG, serious things".
This football term "throw long and deep" brings to mind the "Hail Mary" pass a desperate quarterback must throw to try to pull out a game in the last minute. Too often the pass is INTERCEPTED and the game is lost. Only bad things can happen if rapid, liberal, expensive legislation is rushed through a panting liberal Congress. One can only remember LBJ's (not so) "Great Society" programs, which have nearly bankrupted our country.
Memo to Mr. Emanuel: Where is the extra money going to come from if "95%" of the taxpayers are going to get a tax cut and tax revenues are most certainly going to be lower because of the terrible economy?
Before you blow a few hundred billion dollars more on big government, how about fixing a few of these programs which eat up so much of the federal budget:
Social Security
Medicare
Medicaid
And, oh yeah, I almost forgot. Please look into the $25 billion annual Energy Department budget. This boondoogle was created during the dismal Carter Administration. -- 30 years later, after multiple oil crises, we still do not have any kind of viable energy policy.
The Energy Department is a complete waste of taxpayers' money.
